Studia Humanistyczne AGH

sh"Studia Humanistyczne AGH" (Contributions to Humanities) has been published since 2003, initially once a year and, since 2010, twice a year. Both the dynamic development of the journal, the substantial increase in the range of subjects covered and its high popularity among the representatives of various disciplines within social science and humanities, resulted in ‘Contributions to Humanities’  becoming a quarterly in 2012.

‘Contributions to Humanities’ publishes articles of theoretical and empirical character, review essays and reviews, translations, as well as findings of research carried out within the scope of contemporary social science and humanities. The contributors come from different international scientific and research centers and represent a wide range of academic disciplines: sociology, philosophy, religious studies, cultural studies, anthropology, educational studies, psychology, political science, literature, linguistics, and history. ‘Contributions to Humanities’ accepts articles both in Polish and in English.

The journal is indexed in ERIH PLUS, Index Copernicus, Central and Eastern European Online Library (CEEOL), Central European Journal of Social Sciences and Humanities (CEJSH) and Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ), Pol-index, Bazhum, Google Scholar.

Our quarterly is also available through the Digital Library Europeana (www.europeana.eu). It has been included in the Ministry of Science and Higher Education register of scientific and scholarly journals (list B - 10). All the articles published in ‘Contributions to Humanities’ are easily accessible through the journal’s official website.

CFP: Between Mysterium and Dictatorship. Fashion in Cultural Anthropology Studies

The proposed thematical number is devised to initiate a deepened theoretical reflection on the phenomenon of fashion within Polish scientific community. We assume that not only competences we commonly possess, but also our different from Western cultural heritage let us open new fields of discussions on fashion which may enrich world science.

We are particularly interested in the three research areas which will be covered by papers ordered at specific authors. The first of them is related to methodological questions and the place of the fashion phenomenon as well as the fashion discourse within the perspective of interdisciplinary culture studies. In the proposed papers we are going to take a discussion on cultural iconic memory and the clash of abstract ideas with their material manifestation in the context of fashion. We also want to turn attention to the formation of contemporary fashion discourses and at the same time to the aspects of fashion as spectacle. The second field of our interest covers case studies which emerge in chosen contexts – spirituality understood broadly, rebellion, provocation and mimicry, and concepts at the borderline of fantasy and futurism. The third field is related to the role of new technologies in the process of shaping contemporary fashion and how can they bring about changes in its cultural reception.

We are also open to analyses of other problems connected to fashion as a cultural phenomenon, which would emerge within the discussion we initiate.

The papers should be in English (for non-native speakers of English we highly recommend that you have your manuscript proofread by a native speaker) and not exceed 7000 words (with bibliography).

Manuscript submissions are due on 15. 10. 2019 and should be sent to the editors of the special issue: Jowita Guja (jowitaguja@poczta.fm) and Izabela Trzcińska (trzcinska@agh. edu.pl).

The details about guidelines for papers may be found at: http://journals.agh.edu.pl/human.

All papers will be subject to a peer review.

CALL FOR PAPERS: Adversity encountered on the road to gender diversity – women and men in high business positions and in scientific domains

Gender diversity in STEM fields, especially in business and in academia, has been gaining more and more attention among policy makers and the general public (see e.g.: Beede et al., 2011; Blickenstaff, 2005; Cheryan, Ziegler, Montoya & Jiang, 2017; Sadler, Sonnert, Hazari & Tai, 2012). Significant societal changes combined with deliberate actions to introduce gender equality have meant that the number of women in science domains, academia and leadership positions has been slowly growing in recent years. Yet disparity is still noticeable and in some domains, such as IT, it is actually quite substantial. Several social, psychological and cultural factors have a hand in this phenomenon.

The gender pay gap is also stable and persistent. Even when controlling for domain and position, women still earn significantly less than men. Another vital issue concerns maternal duties, which strongly impact women’s career and vocational decisions. A vast body of scientific research has addressed those and other analogous topics, yet new studies and new approaches are still in demand. These issues are of high importance in terms of identifying socio-cultural mechanisms influencing gender inequality.

Gender diversity is also gaining the attention of business representatives, as the gaps in some crucial competences (like IT skills, leadership skills) are impacting staffing decisions in many organizations. This special issue of Studia Humanistyczne AGH is a result of cooperation between the Diversity Hub Think Tank and AGH University of Science and Technology.
