The journal will disseminate knowledge relating to the metallurgical and foundry engineering in general. The scope of the journal focuses on:

  • Extractive metallurgy including direct reduction, ironmaking, steelmaking, extraction of non‑ferrous metals and special metallurgical processes;
  • Physical metallurgy including materials technology, metallography, heat treatment, creep, corrosion, weldability, fatigue behaviour, testing of materials etc.;
  • Metal working including hot and cold rolling, forging, drawing, sheet forming and other unconventional processes;
  • Foundry engineering including theory and technology of melting and secondary metallurgy of ferrous and non‑ferrous alloys, moulding materials and technology, forming of castings, moulding machines, foundry furnaces and automation of foundry processes;
  • Application of numerical methods in metallurgy, foundry and in mechanical working of metals;
  • Heat engineering, including heat and mass transfer, combustion processes, environment protection.

Peer Review Process

Review procedure:

1. The editors are appointed to assess each publication of at least two independent reviewers from outside the unit.

2. Texts in foreign language evaluates at least one reviewer affiliated with a foreign institution other than the institution's parent reviewed publication.

3. The authors do not know the identity of the reviewers.

4. Review must be formulated in writing and completed an explicit request to the approval of an article for publication, or its rejection.

5. The names of reviewers of the items are not disclosed, but only once a year, the journal publishes a list of reviewers.

Performance in this area is discussed in detail on the website:

Journal History

INSPIRATION FOR LAUNCHING

THE JOURNAL „METALURGIA I ODLEWNICTWO”

In 1954 the Ministry of Education inspired Polish Universities to launching scientific journals. Following this inspiration the Authorities of the Akademia Górniczo-Hutnicza decided to start publication of the Journal “Metalurgia i Odlewnictwo”. The first issue appeared in 1954. The Journal was published in Polish with Polish and English abstracts. English translation of the title was “Metallurgy and Foundry Engineering”.

The Editorial Staff composed of:

a)      Ferrous metallurgy: Professor Władysław Łoskiewicz (1954-56), Professor Stanisław Holewiński (1957-59), Ass. Professor Wacław Różański (1960-69).

b)      Foundry engineering: Ass. Professor Czesław Kalata (1954-61), Ass. Professor Czesław Podrzucki (1962-69).

c)      Non-ferrous metallurgy: Ass. Professor Jerzy Wantuchowski (1962-69)

In the years 1954–74 subsequent issues of the Journal contained publications, dissertations and special conference proceedings. The Journal was printed irregularly and 65 issues were published before 1974. All these issues were edited by the publishers committee of the Journal and were printed by the Zakład Graficzny AGH.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE JOURNAL

He initiated publication of all papers in two languages, English and Polish. Since 1975 (vol. 1) by 2001 (vol. 27) the Journal has been published quarterly and was restricted to the reviewed journal publications. There were no theses and conference papers published anymore.

The subsequent Chief Editorial Staff of the Journal were:

  • Professor Jan Janowski (1970-1978),
  • Professor Eugeniusz Wosiek (1979-1988),
  • Professor Stanisław Gorczyca (1989-1990),
  • Professor Jan Kazanecki (1991-2012),
  • Professor Mirosław Karbowniczek (since 2013).

The subsequent Secretary Editorial Staff of the Journal were:

  • Ph.D. Andrzej Nowakowski (1970-1976),
  • Ph.D. Jan Kazanecki (1977-1990),
  • Ph.D. Jerzy Kajtoch (1991-2012),
  • Ph.D. Małgorzata Perek-Nowak (since 2013),
  • Ph.D. Lechosław Tuz (since 2013).

DEVELOPMENT OF THE JOURNAL

Volume 18 of the Journal (1992) was the first published in English only with an abstract in Polish and the title of the Journal was changed to “Metallurgy and Foundry Engineering”. The Scientific and Didactic Publications „WYDAWNICTWA AGH” of University Publisher edited all the papers published in this Journal.

Starting from the volume 27 (2001) the Journal “Metallurgy and Foundry Engineering” is semi-annual, published twice a year. The Scientific Board, which gathers recognised Polish and foreign scientist has been established. The Editorial Staff is responsible for the evaluation of the papers. All papers are printed in English with abstract and keywords in two languages, English and Polish. The authors supply the English text themselves and the Publisher makes no translations. The University Publisher “Wydawnictwa AGH” is still responsible for editing the papers.

Since 2005 all papers have been published in open access system.

Since 2012 ghost writing has been implemented and the reviewers are selected to avoid conflict of interests.

In 2013, the electronic Open Journal System was introduced to MaFE.

Since 2014, MaFE has been published quaterly and received e-ISSN 2300-8377.

THE SCOPE OF THE JOURNAL

During the many years of publishing the Journal its scope was directly connected with the range of scientific research, which were carried out at the three Faculties:

a) Metallurgy and Materials Science,

b) Non-Ferrous Metallurgy,

c) Foundry-Engineering.

The Journal disseminates the knowledge and scientific research related to metallurgical and foundry engineering and material science in general. The detailed scope of the journal includes:

  • Extractive metallurgy direct reduction, ironmaking, steelmaking, extracting of non-ferrous metals and special metallurgical processes.
  • Physical metallurgy including materials technology, metallography, heat treatment, creep, corrosion, weldability, fatigue, testing of materials etc.
  • Metal forming including hot and cold rolling, forging, drawing, sheet forming and unconventional forming processes.
  • Foundry engineering including theory and technology of melting and secondary metallurgy of ferrous and non-ferrous alloys, moulding materials and technology, forming of castings, moulding machines, foundry furnaces and automation of foundry processes.
  • Application of numerical methods in metallurgy and materials science, including simulations using finite element and boundary element methods, computer aided design of tools and processes, applications of artificial intelligence.
  • Heat engineering, including heat and mass transfer, combustion processes, environment protection.

The original papers (in English), delivered by the Authors, are included in this journal.
